Services Provided
Antenatal Classes
Antenatal classes will help with becoming stronger and more relaxed during your pregnancy and birthing experience. They combine exercise, education and relaxation to help with pelvic, hip and back pain, improve pelvic floor control, improve posture as your body changes and improve core strength. Learn about ways to aid sleep, relaxation, meditation and breathing techniques and how to help with fatigue. Strengthening can help with Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction (SPD), Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP), and abdominal muscle separation, known as Diastasis Recti (DR). Using a combination of gym ball and mat-based exercises in a small group setting, it is also an opportunity to meet other pregnant mums-to-be and make new friends along your pregnancy journey. There are guest speakers such as midwives and pelvic health specialists that will help you understand about the process of labour, delivery and birth in your local area and answer questions or concerns about your care. The classes will help reduce any anxieties and increase your confidence by sharing the highs and lows of pregnancy but also looking forward to becoming a mum to your new baby.
If classes are not your thing, why not book some 1 to 1 sessions to receive all the same information and exercises in an individualised way.
Children’s Physiotherapy
At HS Therapy we see babies, toddlers, children and teenagers for a number of conditions and reasons. Babies can be assessed from birth for talipes (turned-in feet), delayed sitting, crawling or walking, and developmental assessments. Children and adolescents can be seen for growing pains, ankle, knee or hip pain, neuro-developmental management of long-term conditions, acute management of sprains, strains and muscle injuries, fracture (broken bone) or surgery rehabilitation, sports injuries or injury prevention and gait (walking) analysis. Advice and treatment is always sports specific and appropriate to the child’s level and abilities. Children learn best through play and so sessions are made fun and interesting through the use of toys, songs and activities to enjoy. Some children may be suitable for treatment within water for which hydrotherapy sessions can be arranged.
The social and psychological aspects of children’s and teenager’s health are always embedded into assessments and treatment sessions to make sure mental health is addressed as much as physical well-being.
Women’s Health Physiotherapy
Life changing events such as pregnancy, birth, breast cancer surgery or the menopause can have a huge impact on how women perceive themselves and manage their health.
During pregnancy, posture and structural changes can cause back, hip and pelvic pain which can be assessed and treated with soft tissue massage, stretches and exercises. Antenatal conditions such as Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction (SPD), Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP), Abdominal muscle separation or Diastasis Recti (DR) can be treated as well as pelvic floor issues such as incontinence. Advice can also be given around sleeping comfortably during pregnancy, relaxation and breathing techniques to assist with labour and delivery.
Pregnancy massage can be offered to relieve aches and pains and provide some well-earned relaxation. Antenatal classes are also a nice way to meet other mums-to-be in a group environment.
Hip or back pain postnatally can also be treated after baby has been delivered.
Breast surgery can sometimes lead to problems with arm or shoulder tightness as well as self-image but they can all be managed by HS Therapy.
Injury Recovery
Physiotherapy is traditionally provided for a range of injuries and rehabilitation and HS Therapy can offer all these services. Soft tissue injuries such as muscle, tendon or ligament strains and sprains, bone or joint problems such as fractures, dislocations or joint replacements, orthopaedic operations or general surgery can all be suitably managed. General aches and pains, long-term conditions such as arthritis or fibromyalgia, and neurological conditions such as stroke or Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can also be treated. Physical issues with the spine (back, neck, pelvis), upper limb (hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder) and lower limb (foot, ankle, knee, hip) can all be assessed.
Rehabilitation can take place in the form of hands-on therapy, exercises and education using a person-centred approach to deliver a sensitive individualised service.
Holistic Therapies
The assessment and treatment of any individual is always done holistically at HS Therapy. This means that we encompass not just the physical, but the emotional, psychological and spiritual factors of the whole person. Traditional methods of treatment can be combined with alternative methods to achieve well-being. Hands-on techniques such as body massage, Hopi ear candling and Indian head massage as well as breathing techniques, meditation and mindfulness are offered separately or in combination with other treatments to help with healing, swelling, sensitivity, relaxation, sleeping and to reduce anxiety and depression. Talking is also a big part of understanding issues, can help improve awareness and help prevent further problems reoccurring. Pregnancy massage can be offered after your 12 week check and can be a nice way to ease the aches and pains or swelling associated with pregnancy as well as help relaxation, anxiety and sleep.
Hydrotherapy
Treatment within water is a great way to improve movement and strength, balance and coordination, aerobic fitness and to help lose weight. The buoyancy of the water helps the body to float which can allow activity to be done in water that may not be able to be done on land. It helps to off-load joints so that exercise can be easier and less painful to do in water. The water can also be used as a resistance to increase core stability, strength and cardiovascular fitness. The warmer temperature and pressure within the pool can also help with joint pains, swelling, anxiety towards movement, relaxation and breathing, improving mood and overall well-being. Sessions are on a 1:1 basis and offered to both children and adults, usually in combination with land-based sessions.
